One of our patients talks about her Kybella treatent

“I had my first Kybella treatment. I was nervous about having the treatments because I am new to injections.

I had heard it was painful so I was prepared for the worst. Well, let me tell you it was really not a big deal at all! After the initial shots I had stinging for about an hour but NO PAIN just stinging and I also iced my chin the entire hour. I took Arnica for the swelling but am not sure if it helped or not.

The second day still no pain but I had tenderness if my chin was touched. Also, my chin blew up like a bull from, which is how the procedure works. That night I put on a scarf around my neck and met friends out for dinner in public. Once again no pain and also no bruising. The swelling has slowly but steadily reduced. I can see a little improvement in my chin fat but I am told after the second treatment I will really be able to see the results. I will post how the second treatment goes after my shot. I would suggest it to anyone who is looking to get rid of a double chin. I have had no down time and nobody at work has said anything about my bullfrog chin. DT

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. This nonsurgical double chin treatment typically requires 2 sessions schedule 4-6 weeks apart. Treatment plans are customized and some require more vials and more sessions.

Kybella is currently being used for fullness under the chin. Investigations are underway to determine if other areas of the face and body can be treated.

Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.

If you’re bothered by submental fullness, you’re not alone. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS):

  • 67% of people said they’re bothered by under-the-chin fullness, or double chin
  • People are just as bothered by under-the-chin fullness as they are by lines and wrinkles around and under their eyes

Will Kybella treatment lead to sagging of my skin?

No.  As demonstrated in the clinical studies submitted to the FDA, as the fat reduction occurs in the chin and neck area, the skin retracts or tightens to provide a more defined chin and jawline. However, if you already have some crepiness or sagging, the doctor may recommend that you have radiofrequency skin tightening in combination with Kybella.

How long does KYBELLA™ last?

The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, in KYBELLA™ has been shown to naturally break down fat in the body.  Therefore, the elimination of fat cells related to KYBELLA™ treatment should be permanent.  However, weight changes due to diet and exercise habits could increase the size of remaining fat cells.

What are the possible side effects and downtime following KYBELLA™ treatment?

Some swelling and tenderness after treatment is expected, though it usually resolves within a few days. There may also be temporary numbness at the injection site, which resolves. The use of ice and painkillers (Tylenol and NSAIDs) reduces these mild effects.

Are KYBELLA™ injections painful?

Kybella involves a minimal amount of discomfort during injection of the solution but otherwise is extremely well-tolerated.  To increase patient comfort during the procedure, Dr. Curcio pre-treats patient with an anesthetic called lidocaine.  Additionally, she provides cooling of the skin with ice, which distracts from any mild discomfort, before and immediately after the procedure.
